What is large dent repair?
Size alone does not rule out PDR; stretch and paint damage do. A large, gradual dent still has metal that wants to return to its factory shape once the tension holding it in place is released. The technician works from the outer edges inward, lifting the whole area evenly so that no single point is over-pushed, and uses larger tools and glue tabs to move more metal per pass.
Where a large dent includes a sharp centre point or crosses a bodyline, that section is treated with crease and bodyline techniques within the same job.
Dents suitable for this service
- Broad shallow dents from reversing and parking impacts
- Body-contact dents on doors and quarter panels
- Soft dents larger than palm size with intact paint
- Large dents on bonnets, roofs and boot lids
When PDR may not be suitable
- Dents with cracked or flaking paint anywhere in the damage
- Dents with sharp, visible fold lines through the middle
- Buckled panels where the edges or seams have moved
- Structural damage
Benefits
- Avoids repainting a whole panel or replacing it
- Keeps the factory paint and panel
- Usually completed in one visit
- A fraction of the cost of panel replacement and paint
How Dry Denter assesses the damage
Large dents need photos from several angles under reflection so we can judge whether the edges are gradual or folded. We assess paint condition closely because large impacts often leave scuffs. If full removal is unlikely we tell you what improvement is realistic and let you decide.
Repair process
- Photo assessment with multiple angles
- Dent mapped; outer edges identified as the starting point
- Larger rods or glue tabs used to lift the area evenly from the edges inward
- Centre refined with fine tools; sharp sections treated as creases
- High spots tapped down and the whole area blended
- Final inspection under the light and in daylight
How long does it take?
Large dents take from 2 hours to a full day. Depth, the presence of a sharp centre, bodylines crossing the dent and rear access decide the time more than the diameter does.
Common questions about large dent repair
Is there a maximum dent size for PDR?
Not a fixed one. Soft dents the size of a dinner plate or larger are repaired regularly. What matters is that the paint is intact and the metal has not been stretched or folded.
What if the dent cannot be fully removed?
We tell you before starting. Sometimes a large dent can be reduced to a point where a small spot repair is all that is needed, which still saves the cost of a full panel respray.
